Conference Safety without Borders

 This three-day conference, organised by the Faculties of Social Sciences, Psychology, and Law of the Free University, Amsterdam, explores the experience and meaning of security in a globalising world. Key concepts such as ‘Safety’ and ‘Human Security’ will be addressed in a series of lectures and workshops.
The conference intends to address the 'three D’s' of Human Security: Defence - Diplomacy - Development. These themes will be evaluated from top-down and bottom-up perspectives: What do Human Security policies mean in the hands of international organisations and national states (Human Security from Above)? What do they mean at grass-root level for those whose physical security is in danger (Human Security from Below)? How do they affect traditional security organisations? And, at a different level of abstraction, what are the theoretical consequences of the new discourse on human security?
Date: 12-14 April 2005
Location: Auditorium and Agora rooms, main building Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam.
