Latin America: Democracy and Society at the Crossroads

Do democracies in Latin America have to reinvent themselves to maintain workable mechanisms for representation and control? Professor Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil, will address this and other questions in his lecture on Latin American democracies.
After being relatively stable for almost two decades, the democracies of Latin American countries are being challenged by new developments. They seem to find themselves at a crossroads, where traditional political parties are being replaced by more superficial networks on the one hand, while at the same time losing influence as mediator between citizens and state to new actors, like NGO’s, ethnical en territorial communities and populist leaders. Global changes are directly affecting the functioning of Latin American States and democracies, by shifting economical and social-ecological decisionmaking from a national to a global level. As a result democracies in Latin America become more and more vulnerable.
