Independent Research and Informed Opinion on World Affairs.
RISQ is an independent association of scholars, journalists, politicians, and activists who seek to render international political decision-making more inclusive, equitable, and responsible.
Whether they pertain to cultural, economic or environmental issues, most social questions today bear consequences beyond national borders. Indeed, as national governments and societies are awash with international flows of people, goods, money and information, social questions are ever more likely to entail international implications.
Hence, the rationale of "Review of International Social Questions", RISQ for short: an independent association of scholars, journalists, policy makers, and activists who seek to render foreign policy, broadly conceived, more responsive to the demands of a globalising world. Currently, there are about 30 RISQ Associates, each with his or her specific expertise, concerns, and (research) interests.
Key Themes
Based in the Netherlands, RISQ seeks to inform public debates and political decision-making in Europe and beyond on four key themes:
1. The Condition of Citizenship - Dossiers: The governance of multicultural societies--with specific reference to European immigration policies, and with due regard to the social causes of international migration and the politicization of ethnic/religious identities and movements.
2. Globalisation - Dossiers: Social justice, environmental sustainability, and democratic participation in the world economy--with specific reference to international economic policies set forth by the European Commission (EC), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and international financial institutions (IFIs) such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
3. State of War - Dossiers: Human rights, self-determination, and international security policy--with due regard to the implications of the "new wars" (i.e. the "war on drugs" and, most recently, the campaign against terrorism) for national liberation movements and such vested human rights as freedom of speech, expression, and association as well as privacy.
4. Science for Life - Dossiers: The social implications, ecological consequences, and ethical dilemmas of technological and scientific advancements in the areas of applied information and communication technology (ICT), biotechnology, and genetics--with specific reference to pending international regulation of reproductive technologies, the trade in genes, species, and genetically modified food.
